Positano

Positano is a village on the Amalfi coast of Italy, about 50km southeast of Naples. With pastel coloured houses tumbling down the cliffs, Positano is considered one of the most picturesque towns in Italy, making it very attractive to tourists and filmmakers.
The town thrived in medieval times as a port until trade gradually declined in the 19th century. It faced lean times as a fishing village until it was discovered by tourists in the 1950s. The winding streets are best explored on foot although it can be hilly. Along with tourism, its economy is driven by the production of limoncello liqueur and a local tipple called L'Albertissimo.
This colourful resort has some charming architecture such as the Church of Santa Maria Asunta which has a dome covered in glorious majolica tiles. Inside is the 13th century black Madonna which, according to local legend, was stolen from Byzantium by pirates who dumped it overboard in a terrible storm and it washed up in Positano.
Things to do in Positano include exploring the shops around the harbour and taking the bus along the coast to Sorrento, a breathtaking trip along the Amalfi coast. Enjoy the Spiaggi Grande main beach in Positano or the more secluded cove at Fornillo. Ferries regularly run to the nearby islands of Paestrum and Capri, which is famous for its blue grotto.
Further afield, day trips can easily be taken to the ancient city of Pompeii and to Naples. Visitors can walk along the coast or climb Mount Vesuvius, a currently dormant volcano surrounded by a national park.
