Ravello

Ravello is a delightful small town on the Amalfi coast of southern Italy with stunning Mediterranean views from its coastal position. Although small, with just 2,500 inhabitants, it is a popular destination for tourists. Like much of Italy, Ravello has a long and colourful history. It was founded in the 5th century and by the 12th century had 25,000 inhabitants who built many beautiful palazzos and villas in the area.
Historic highlights include the Duomo or Cathedral with its beautiful marble Pulpit of the Gospels created by Bartolomeo in 1272. The 13th century Villa Rufolo with its lovely garden was built by one of Ravello’s wealthiest residents and the Moorish Villa Rufolo is another must-see attraction. The Church of San Giovanni del Toro dates back to 1000AD with ancient mosaic fragments.
Such history and architectural beauty has attracted many artists, musicians and writers to this little piece of paradise over the centuries. The town has many small restaurants, shops and galleries showcasing their work, especially ceramics. The surrounding hillside vineyards produce local white wines. Each summer the Ravello Festival brings together a splendid collection of musicians and artists to celebrate a wide range of musical presentations and arts exhibits.
The best way to reach Ravello is by car, or by bus or ferry to Amalfi which is within walking distance of Ravello.
